{"id":12408,"date":"2024-02-09T07:05:11","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T06:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/velezylozano.com\/?p=12408"},"modified":"2024-02-08T16:17:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T15:17:58","slug":"why-is-saint-apollonia-the-patron-saint-of-dentists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/velezylozano.com\/en\/why-is-saint-apollonia-the-patron-saint-of-dentists\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Saint Apollonia the patron saint of dentists?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, 9 February, marks the day of <strong>Saint Apollonia<\/strong>The patron saint of dentistry, and at V\u00e9lez &amp; Lozano we have celebrated it over the years in many different ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/velezylozano.com\/en\/today-is-saint-apollonia-patron-saint-of-dentists\/\">different ways<\/a>. That is why, this year, taking advantage of the fact that it coincides with the weekly publication of our blog, we have decided to tell you her story and why she has ended up being popularly recognised as the patron saint of the profession.<\/p>\n<p>As Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria between 247 and 265, recounts during the festivities to commemorate the millennium of the foundation of Rome, in the last years of the rule of Philip 'the Arab', the persecution and anger against Christians by the people of Alexandria reached serious heights of cruelty. One of these parishioners who was tortured and killed for worshipping Christ was Apollonia, who is described in church tradition as holding a position similar to that of deaconess (catechist).<\/p>\n<p>One of the tortures inflicted on her was that of having all her teeth knocked out. Like so many other martyrs in the Catholic tradition, she was condemned to death at the stake. For this, years later, the Catholic Church named her a saint.<\/p>\n<p>During the Middle Ages it was customary to pray to her to alleviate the pain of infections and other conditions in the mouth and she has traditionally been depicted with tongs, an allusion to her torture when she was stripped of her teeth.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most famous portrayals in which it appears is '.<em>The martyrdom of Saint Apollonia<\/em>by the French painter Jean Fourquet:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12410\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/velezylozano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/cuadro.jpeg?resize=300%2C243&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/velezylozano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/cuadro.jpeg?resize=300%2C243&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/velezylozano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/cuadro.jpeg?resize=15%2C12&amp;ssl=1 15w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/velezylozano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/cuadro.jpeg?w=512&amp;ssl=1 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although many of the traditions of that time have been lost, some prayers or sayings of the time are still preserved, such as this kind of recitation that goes:<\/p>\n<p><em>At heaven's door<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Apolonia was<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and the Virgin Mary<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that was going on there<\/em><br \/>\n<em>says: Apolonia, what are you doing?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sleep or candles?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I do not sleep or veil<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that of a toothache<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I am dying.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>By the star of Venus<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and the setting sun<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and for Christ's sake<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that I carried in my belly<\/em><br \/>\n<em>no more pain<\/em><br \/>\n<em>neither tooth nor tooth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, nowadays, the most common thing to do is to go to dental clinics like ours.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, February 9 is the feast day of Saint Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry, and at V\u00e9lez &amp; Lozano we have celebrated it over the years in many different ways.
