Yesterday, 20th October, the National Dental Hygienist's Day was celebrated throughout Spain, a date that coincides with Saint Irene, a name closely linked to the history of this profession.
Irene Newman was the world's first dental hygienist, trained in 1907 by Dr. Alfred Fones, a pioneer in preventive dentistry.
Irene began her career educating patients about the importance of oral hygiene and performing dental cleanings to prevent disease. Her work laid the foundation for the creation of the profession of dental hygienist, now recognised as fundamental in maintaining oral health.
For her and for all our colleagues, we claim today the importance of their profession and the work they do every day in dental clinics all over the world.
