Do whitening pastes really whiten teeth?

In our quest to maintain a brighter smile, many turn to toothpastes that promise fast and effective teeth whitening. However, it is important to clarify that these pastes do not whiten teeth as such. What they do is remove surface stains caused by foods such as coffee, red wine, or habits such as smoking. These external stains can make our teeth look darker or yellowish.

Whitening pastes contain abrasive ingredients and chemicals that remove these stains from the enamel surface, but do not penetrate deeply enough to change the internal colour of the tooth. Although some include peroxides, they do so in very low concentrations, which is not enough to achieve significant whitening.

On the other hand, not all whitening pastes focus only on the aesthetic aspect. Many also offer additional benefits, such as enamel remineralisation, caries prevention and gum treatment. Thus, they combine oral health with an improvement in the appearance of our teeth.

Recommendations for a healthy smile

To maintain stain-free, natural-coloured teeth, the ideal is to maintain rigorous oral hygiene and avoid abusing products that can damage the enamel. Excessive use of whitening pastes, even if they are low abrasive, can wear down the enamel over time.

For the most effective and long-lasting results, we recommend going to the clinic for professional tooth whitening, where safe and controlled products are used that work deeply, removing pigmentation from the inside of the tooth without damaging it.
